IRP and NewsU launch online course: "International Reporting Basics"
WASHINGTON, DC – The International Reporting Project and The Poynter Institute's News University have released a collaborative online course, “International Reporting Basics: What You Need to Know Before You Go.” This free course, a partnership between the International Reporting Project (IRP) and NewsU, helps reporters prepare for an assignment before they go abroad.

“It's more important than ever for journalists to know how to report safely and accurately from another country,” said John Schidlovsky, director of the International Reporting Project at The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. “We’re delighted to join with News University at The Poynter Institute in offering this unique course.”
“The public needs the best reporting possible. And that means going to the far corners of the world. Journalists need the tools to be successful in their quest for information. This course is a terrific resource and the IRP are terrific partners,” said Howard Finberg, director of NewsU, The Poynter Institute’s e-learning center.
The course features tips from IRP alumni, many of whom are veteran foreign correspondents and foreign news desk editors. It also includes an interactive message board where journalists and professionals who have worked abroad can post country-specific travel recommendations and cultural do’s and don’ts.
A free, self-directed course, “International Reporting Basics” includes strategies for selling story ideas to editors and a list of online resources for preparing to cover an assignment overseas. The total time to complete the course is about one to two hours.
